A long-overdue update on the boys -
We had a very busy weekend, beginning with looking at some bedroom furniture for Gabe's room, which we are going to end up buying. We got an awesome deal on craigslist - trundle bed, dresser, nightstand, desk, and hutch, all for $550. And it's a nice maple set, in very good condition. Woohoo!
Saturday afternoon we took them to a Touch a Truck event in town, which I also volunteered at for a few hours. And later that afternoon, we went up to Providence to meet up with some friends from MA who we haven't seen in nearly 3 years. It was fun to see them, and their daughter, who we had never met.
Then of course Sunday was race day, and Scott and the boys kept busy while I was up in Providence running, and then Scott's parents came over for dinner that night.
Busy, busy, busy.
Gabe is now officially registered at our first-choice preschool. Scott got up and stood in line at 5am, and it paid off. Amazingly enough, when he got there at 5, there were 32 people in line ahead of him, and the guy who was first in line had gotten there at 2am!!!!! That is CRAZY!
The reason this school is so popular is that a) it's a fantastic school. Good teachers, great program. b) It's $75 a month cheaper than most of the other preschools in town.
There's no way I would have gotten up at 2am (or made Scott get up at 2am) to get Gabe a spot here, but I am glad that he was able to get there early enough to get it. Definitely feels good to know that that issue is settled, and that Gabe is going to be at a great preschool in September, and that we're going to be saving a little $$ each month!
I had offered to be the one to get up - registration was yesterday morning - but Scott said that he would do it, and I'm very glad that he did, because I was pretty wiped out from the race on Sunday, and as luck would have it, the boys decided to sleep in Monday morning, so I was able to sleep until 7:15. It was glorious. They definitely chose the perfect morning to sleep late!
Dante actually woke up in the middle of the night Sunday, too, and I was up with him for about half an hour. He just had some gas or something, but he was very uncomfortable and upset, so I brought him downstairs to get him a drink, and I sat down on the couch with him and he started insisting that he wanted to watch the news. That's what he says when we come downstairs in the morning, and I tried to explain to him that it wasn't morning, but he started freaking out, and I didn't have the energy to fight with him, so I put the tv on and we watched an episode of What Not to Wear. After about 20 minutes, he started sinking into me and his breathing slowed, so I shut the tv off and brought him back upstairs, where he conked right out. I think it's so funny that he'll sit and watch regular tv shows with us - that's something Gabe would never do - he'd just complain and whine that he wanted to watch one of 'his shows.' But Dante actually sat there and watched that show with me. Funny kid.
Even funnier is that picture above - if you look closely, you'll see that those are his sunglasses around his waist. He did that one day, and I told him it looked like a belt, so now he puts them there and calls it his 'seatbelt.'
Since I joined the new Moms Club, and we're getting out and socializing so much more often, with so many more kids, I've seen a big change in Gabe's behavior. He still gets clingy and shy sometimes, but he's getting much better about playing with other kids. And he wants to play with other kids all the time. We went to the park by ourselves yesterday afternoon, and he was upset that nobody else was there. And I've also noticed that when there are kids at the park who he doesn't know, he'll go up to them now and ask them what their names is, and initiate conversations with them, which is something he didn't do before.
So the new Moms Club has clearly been good for EVERYONE!
Gabe did have fun at the park yesterday, though, even though it was 'just us.' He and Dante played together and had a great time. They were so cute - Gabe asked Dante if he wanted to play hide-and-seek, and then started counting, and Dante shrieked and ran off to hide. It was so cute. The only problem is that Gabe counted to 10, and then just kept counting and counting...... I don't know how far he would have counted, but I stopped him and told him he could go find Dante; he only had to count to 10 : )
They have also been doing a lot of wrestling. Gabe lays down on the floor, and Dante jumps on his back and they roll around and push and shove each other, giggling uncontrollably the whole time. It's pretty hysterical. And they're actually very polite, too - if one of them accidentally kicks the other, they both are careful to apologize. It's so funny, too, because if Gabe says "Sorry, Dante," Dante says it right back to him - "Sorry, Gabe" - even though he doesn't have anything to apologize for.
And today we were at playgroup at a friend's house, and Gabe fell down. He didn't get hurt or cry or anything, but Dante saw him fall and came running over asking "Are you ok, Gabe?"
I am just so happy to see them playing together so much more, and truly enjoying each other's company. It's amazing to watch.
The best moment yet - walking into the gym this morning, I was holding Gabe's hand, and I told him to take Dante's hand, and as he did so, he said "I love you, Dante," and Dante looked up at Gabe with a huge grin on his face and said "Love you, too, Gabe."
If only they knew how proud and happy that makes me.
I'll wrap it up with a few pictures. Most are from the Touch a Truck event on Saturday. They had fun, but Gabe was too scared to sit in any of the trucks. I can't wait to tell him in a few years that his 2-year-old brother climbed up and sat in a cement mixer and a fire truck, but he was too afraid to. They both loved the little miniature Shriners car the best -
Also, this is where Dante likes to sit now. He plunks himself down in there and says "Nice seat!"
They are funny, funny kids.
