I do plan on putting together a full race report from Saturday, but wanted to update a bit on the boys first, since this blog is called Me 'and the Boys.'
There's lots of random stuff, so I'm just going to write it, well, randomly -
- Dante is officially a Big Boy. We took apart the crib and put it away. He's doing great sleeping in his bed, but not so great sleeping in Gabe's room. We had a super-busy weekend, and they were both kind of overtired, and two nights in a row we had to separate them, so we're going to give them a few nights apart, in their own rooms, and then try them sharing the room again in a week or so. The highlight of last night's shenanigans was when we heard Gabe over the monitor - not even 5 minutes after we made it very clear to them that they needed to STAY IN THEIR BEDS - saying "Dante, get out of your bed. Please??? Please???"
- Last week, on one of the really warm days we had, I set up the sprinkler for them to run through. Unfortunately, as excited as they were at the prospect of running through the sprinkler, the reality was anything but. They whined and cried and ran away from it.
- The other day they were playing in the living room, and Dante got himself settled on the couch with his blanket and said very sternly to Gabe "First I have to take a nap. Don't wake me up, Gabe!" And today Gabe was asking me if they could watch TV this afternoon, and Dante said "We'll see, Gabe."
- We found a deer tick on Dante last week. Not feeling so great about that, as I have not been vigilant about checking them every night. I'm really, really hoping that nothing comes of it, and for now we just have to wait and keep an eye on him and see if he develops any symptoms of Lyme. If nothing else, it was certainly a wakeup call for me to do a better job of giving them both a once-over every single night.
- They absolutely LOVED doing their race Saturday morning. They did so well, too - waited very patiently at the starting line, and took off the second they heard "go!" and both went flying down to the finish. I have to say, I was pretty proud of both of them, and had tears in my eyes watching them. Even if neither of them grow up to have any interest in running, I'll still be happy that we've had the opportunity for me to share this with them on some level : )
- Later that afternoon, Dante woke up from his 4-hour nap (!) and came downstairs asking where his racing shirt was. I told him it was dirty, so we had to put it in the wash. So he asked for his medal, and I gave it to him, and he started 'racing' up and down the hallway. Then he fell and hurt his knee, and said very sadly "I all done racing now."
- We had a Moms club bbq here Friday night, with 11 families. It was so much fun! The kids had a blast playing in the yard, and everyone brought some snacks, and we grilled burgers and hotdogs. The weather was perfect, too, so it was just a great night. And since it was the day after my birthday, Scott arranged for one of the moms to stop at the store and pick up a birthday cake he had made for me -
Before you start saying to yourself "wow, what a great husband that Scott is!" - notice that it says "Happy 43rd Birthday." I won't be 43 for 6 more years...... He is a great husband - with a bad sense of humor : )
- As I mentioned, we had a really busy weekend, with the bbq Friday night, then the race Saturday morning, and then Dad's retirement party in CT yesterday. And even though Dante took good naps on Friday and Saturday, he was still completely wiped out all weekend - and the fact that they've been waking up at 5am didn't help matters. But this morning they both slept until 6:45 - finally! I'm not holding my breath for that to happen again anytime soon, but I'll take it when I can get it!
- Gabe was working on his puzzles the other day, and he likes to sing and talk to himself when he does puzzles, and this time he was talking about how he couldn't go to sleep the night before, and this is what he said "And then it was too hot, and then I couldn't go to sleep. And that's my story! The end!"
- The funniest Gabe anectdote of all, though, is from yesterday's car ride home from CT. We had been at a baseball game, so ate all sorts of junk like hotdogs and popcorn and brownies, and apparently Gabe had a burp that tasted kind of bad. He calls them "yucky burps." So he had one in the car yesterday, and was kind enough to notify us that he had had a yucky burp. Then he went on to say "I don't like yucky burps. I like the plain ones." And just in case we were interested in discussing the yucky burps further, he asked "Daddy, when you were my age, did you have yucky burps?" A true connoisseur, he is.....
And just a quick update on me - the gym is going to be closed for renovations Thursday through Sunday, so I knew I had to be sure to get in some swimming early this week, and this morning the lap lane was wide open, so I jumped right in. Did 200m warmup, 400m of drills, and 1200m freestyle - that's 1800 meters total! When I'm careful to really swim slowly, I feel like I could go on forever. I felt so great today, and am so, so happy that I finally got myself back in the pool!
