Wilting

Another hot day, another trip to the beach. Getting to the beach with them and being at the beach with them isn't that much of an effort. It's the cleanup that gets me every time - especially on a weekday, when Scott's not with us and I have to handle all the cleanup myself. It's quite a chore. 

We had a nice time today, though, and stayed a little longer than we did yesterday. I wasn't in any hurry to get back to our miserably hot house, and the boys were doing well, so I didn't see any reason to rush. We met up with a few people from the Moms club, and it was nice for me to have someone to chat with while the boys played. 

The water's warming up, too - almost to the mid-60s. I went in today, and it was definitely chilly, but refreshing. If Scott had been there to watch the boys, I would have gone for a full-fledged swim. 

Speaking of swimming, I had every intention of going this morning, but then I was struck with a case of insomnia last night, and didn't get to sleep until nearly 2am. And I woke up feeling pretty awful. Gabe has had the sniffles and a cough for the past few days, and I think I caught whatever he has. It seems like just a head cold, and I'm hoping it doesn't get much worse, but it's definitely taking a toll on me, and working out today was just out of the question.  

If it hadn't been so miserably hot today, I would have just stayed home and tried to get a little bit of rest, but getting out of here and into cooler air was essential, so I rallied and made the beach trip, and I'm glad I did. I felt ok most of the day, but I'm fading fast now, and it's going to be a very early bedtime for me tonight. I do want to get back in the pool soon, though. I'm really missing it now, which is a very clear sign that it's been way, way too long! 

An interesting development with Gabe over the past week or so - he's really interested in rhyming words. He'll just say a word and ask me what rhymes with it. It's a great little game, and I find it fascinating to see how the gears are turning in his little head as he thinks about this kind of stuff. 

He's got such a fabulous memory, too. We were driving to the pizza party we went to last Friday night, and to get there, we drove down a street in town that we rarely drive down. In fact, the last time we drove down this street was two years ago in January, when I did a 5K that ended on the street. And he remembered that!  As we drove down the street, he said "This is where you did your race, Mommy!"  It's pretty cute, actually - he remembers all the locations of the various races that Scott has brought them to to cheer me on. I get a kick out of hearing him say "Hey - this is where we went to your race!"   And as I rack up more and more 5K performances, we're hearing him say that pretty frequently as we drive around town! 

Dante doesn't always remember the race locations, but he's always got something to say. The child just does NOT stop talking! Did we really consult Early Intervention for him just a few months ago, to help him start talking more????!!!!!  He's just like his Daddy - has the gift of gab. I'm not complaining at all - it just astounds me sometimes how he can keep up a constant stream of chatter. 

And when he asks you a question, he asks it as if he assumes that you're not going to answer him right away, so he just asks the question again and again, barely giving you a chance to chime in with the answer - "Where are we going, Mommy? Where are we going, Mommy? Where are we going, Mommy?"  Between him and Gabe (and Scott), this has become a very loud household. 

One last thing - and it might be one of those "you had to be there" moments, but I thought it was pretty funny. When they were eating their popsicles last night, Dante's was melting quicker than he could eat it (common popsicle malfunction), and a big chunk of it fell off the stick and into the grass. 

Seeing as how it was horribly hot, and he was tired and cranky because of the heat, he just had a complete meltdown over the popsicle falling. Sobbing, flailing, the whole nine yards...   So, Scott scooped the popsicle up from the grass and brought it over to Dante, and told him he didn't need the stick, he could just pick it up and eat it with his hands. 

This prompted more sobbing and flailing, and Dante screeching "I  WANT A STICK!!!!!" 

Then Gabe, who had been watching all the theatrics, went running down the hill in the backyard waving his popsicle stick in the air and yelling "HE WANTS A STICK!!!!!"  

I think that's now our official motto for Summer 2008.

Hilarious! I don't know how many times Matt or Jon have gone off about a Poptart breaking in half or a banana not staying in the peel and insisting that we fix it. Something we have to look forward to with Chris, I'm sure. Great post!
