I don't really enjoy being woken up at 5:30 in the morning, but when I wake up and immediately start laughing, it takes some of the sting out of it. That's exactly what happened yesterday morning, when I was woken by the sound of Dante's little fists pounding on the side of our bed, and him yelling right in my face "Wake UP!!!! Wake UP, Mommy!!!!"
One thing he most definitely is not is subtle.
This morning, Scott let me sleep in, which was heavenly. I thought about trying to get up and go for a bike ride, but I felt like I needed the rest more than I needed the workout, so instead, I slept until 7:30, and I'm so glad I did. I felt so much better after that extra sleep. And I worked out later in the morning - a nice 1750m swim at the pool (500m drills, and 1250m freestyle).
I got the flat tire fixed yesterday at the bike shop, so my bike is ready to go. And they gave me a good lesson at the shop on how to fix a flat. My main error was in not inflating the tube slightly before trying to put it in the tire. I'll definitely remember that step now!
The boys and I had a nice day today. We went to the gym, and had a few errands to do, and while Dante was napping this afternoon, Gabe and I had a really nice time sitting in the living room working on reading and spelling. He is SO close to reading! It's amazing to watch the wheels turning as he sounds out letters, and to see his eyes light up as he puts those sounds together and figures out what the word is.
One time when I was prompting him to sound out each letter in the word, he went through and spelled the word and said what sound each letter made, and then he sat back and said "Ok, now put it all together, Mommy!" as if he was the one teaching me!!! So funny!!!
And this morning after breakfast, he said "Can you do me a favor, Mommy?" I laughed a little and said "What favor would you like me to do?" I honestly don't think he had anything in mind (maybe he wasn't expecting me to say yes?!) - he paused for a minute and then said "Um, I would like you to fill the pool up for us."
He sounds like such a little man when he talks now - mostly because he copies absolutely everything that we say, including when I was exasperated with them the other day and I muttered something about how they were driving me nuts. So several times today, Gabe said that something was "driving him nuts!" And he said it with the same sigh and exasperation that I said it with. Luckily I've never been one to swear much, so the things he picks up from me aren't all that terrible.....
Gabe's speech and mannerisms rub off on Dante, too, so that when he talks, he sounds much older than he is. When we were getting ready to go out in the yard this afternoon, Dante looked at me and said "It's a nice summer day to go in the pool, Mommy." I agreed that yes, in fact, it was a nice summer day to go in the pool : )
That's just what they did this afternoon, too. They had a blast. They crack me up, though - they were standing in the pool with their watering cans, dumping water over their heads and laughing and laughing. But god forbid we suggest that they take a shower instead of a bath at night - they both scream and cry like we're going to torture them. And Dante still cries when we shampoo his hair during his bath. But I guess it's ok for THEM to pour the water over their own heads. Go figure.
We had a super summery meal tonight. Grilled chicken, pasta with freshly made pesto, and a medley of sauteed veggies, all of which came from our weekly farm share - squash, zucchini, carrots, and broccoli The boys wouldn't eat any of the veggies, but they both ate a ton of chicken and pasta, and had some strawberries for dessert, so they did pretty well for themselves.
The farm shares are still going well. We're getting a lot of great stuff every week. I am glad we split it with the neighbors, though - we'd never eat the full share ourselves. If the boys ate more veggies, it would be fine, but it's usually just me and Scott eating them, so half a share has been plenty.
My only problem this week is that they gave us a huge bunch of fresh fennel, and I have no earthly idea what to do with it. I'm all for trying new recipes, though, and I hate to waste food, so I'm off to google fennel recipes....
Yea, let's hope the kids only pick up our good mannerisms :-)

Love waking up laughing... kids will do that to you. At least he was hitting the bed and not you!
