The boys and I had a mini-vacation last week - just to Connecticut, to visit family and friends - and we had so much fun. We spent a good portion of Wednesday afternoon in the pool, since it was a really hot and humid day. The boys were both freaked out in the pool at first - I think because they're so used to running and splashing along the shore at the beach, that they get really scared when they realize they're in water where they can't touch bottom.
But after a while, we finally got them both more relaxed and having fun. And it took a LOT of convincing, but we finally got Gabe to trust us and realize that he is in fact tall enough to stand and touch the bottom with his toes and still keep his head above water. After the screaming and protesting stopped, he was thrilled with this little discovery!
We had a fun family dinner Wed. night with Mom and Dad and Chu-Chu, and then took the boys to Dairy Queen, where we had been hoping to get a much sought-after Tagalong Blizzard, but sadly, they were all out and I had to settle for a Butterfinger Blizzard. It was a pretty good compromise : )
Thursday was a much cooler, more comfortable day, and we spent the morning visiting Chu-Chu, and then finally made our way down to see the Kielhacks. The boys had fun playing with Lillian and Giselle, and it was great for me and Dye to get caught up a bit.
Another fabulous dinner Thursday night, followed by another trip for ice cream - this time to a Milford landmark - the Sundae House.
It's been a long time since we spent the night anywhere with the boys, and I had no idea how things would go when it came time for bed. Overall, I'd say it went fairly well. I intentionally kept them awake later than usual, wanting them to be good and tired when bedtime arrived. But despite their exhaustion, they still stayed up for a while after I put them to bed. I wasn't surprised, though.
I had to go up a few times to calm them down, and the first night Dante fell asleep shortly after my last trip upstairs, but Gabe stayed awake until I came up myself around 9:40. The second night was much the same, except that they both fell asleep closer to 9:00, well before I came up, so they at least did a little better.
And once they were asleep, they slept through the night fine (Except for the first night, when Dante fell out of bed! He was so out of it, though, he went right back to sleep.), and luckily, since they had gone to sleep so much later, they slept until 6:30 both mornings, so it wasn't two nights of great sleep, but it went better than I anticpated. It definitely made me feel a little better about attempting a trip up to Maine with them next month.
Friday was another cool, dry, comfortable morning, and I was able to sneak out for a short 4-mile run. It's always kind of fun to run in a new place, and the weather was just beyond perfect - so different from the stifling humidity we've had recently - it was such a nice run. I realized as I was running, easily maintaining a 9:15 / 9:30 pace, that the heat has been slowing me down so much this past week or two. It was nice to feel so much less sluggish!
We headed home after lunch Friday, and both the boys were completely exhausted, but didn't sleep a wink on the way home. Dante fell asleep on the couch before dinner, though. Poor kid was wiped out!
It was a really fun visit, though, and I'm glad we did it. As much as I love it when the whole extended family gets together, it's nice for us to visit when things are a bit quieter, and they were so excited that we got to have a sleepover, so I'm glad it all went well.
And since Scott has this Monday and Tuesday off, we're now in the midst of another mini-vacation right here at home. Yesterday was a beach day, and we had a fabulous time. Today's weather isn't so beachy, so we've just been playing outside a little and running some errands.
I spent quite a bit of time in the garden this morning, weeding and clearing out some of the plants that long ago went to seed, and was delighted to discover several green peppers growing, as well as cauliflower and pumpkins. And our tomatoes are finally starting to ripen, which I'm so happy about! I've been eating tomatoes nonstop lately, and the ones I'm getting from the Farmer's Market are great, but it's always nicer when you can get them from your own garden!
And I was happily surprised to find tons of potatoes growing! We have three rows planted, and I harvested 30 potatoes from just half of one row, so we are definitely going to be all set for potatoes for a while!
All else is going along well. I'm still feeling some little kicks and thumps - usually at least a couple times a day - but they're still not strong enough that I'm feeling them really regularly. I expect that will happen in a couple more weeks. Still feeling tired every afternoon - some days are worse than others, and on the really tired days, I let the boys watch an hour or so of TV so I can rest. I don't like to do that, but there are days where I'm really not up to much else.
But aside from that, I feel great. I'm craving vegetables and fruit like you wouldn't believe, and have been eating so many salads, which is a good thing, I guess - better than my first trimester cravings of Fluff and potato chips! Tonight we're headed out to one of our favorite local summertime restaurants to stuff our faces with seafood - it'll be the first time I've had lobster all summer, and I can't wait!
This week was light on workouts, since my legs were trashed after the triathlon last Sunday. I went to the gym Monday and Tuesday, but didn't do anything Wed. and Thurs., and then just my short run on Friday.
And this morning I went for what I'm fairly certain is my last bike ride on the road until next spring. Scott is getting too nervous about me being out on the road, and even though I go out super early so there isn't a lot of traffic, I understand his anxiety, and I think he's probably right that I should stick to the bike path from now on.
I still feel great on the road bike, though, so won't be switching to the hybrid anytime soon. I'll just be cautious and stay off the roads. I don't think I'm going to be looking to go for super-long rides anymore, anyway. I was riding a lot slower this morning than I have the past few times I've gone out, and as I was finishing up my ride, I was nearing 17 and a half miles, and the old me would have ridden that extra 2.5 miles, to make it an even 20, but the pregnant me knew that I was tired and I should just pack it in and go home, so that's what I did.
It was a nice ride, though. I wanted to get in one last ride along the ocean, and I'm glad I did : )
