Dante had his first day of preschool today, but strangely enough, I didn't even get teary. I wasn't even all that emotional. I think it's because I know it's only two days a week, and I know that I still have another whole year of him being in preschool before he goes to the big K.
And on top of that, he's been ready to go since last year, so he was beyond excited and happy to be there. All the teachers know him, and it was almost like Norm walking into "Cheers," the way they all greeted him like an old friend. I have no doubt that he'll settle in nicely and do very well : )
Gabe had his first school absence yesterday, due to waking up with a cold. I think I've been brainwashed by all the swine flu frenzy, and as soon as he woke up with a stuffy nose and scratchy throat and complaining of being tired, I assumed that it would quickly be followed by a raging fever and chills, and didn't want to be the mom who sends her kid to school only to have him shipped right back home an hour later because he's clearly very sick. So I was cautious and decided to keep him home. Stupid swine flu paranoia!
As it turned out, he just has a cold, and really didn't act very sick at all, aside from being just a little tired, so even though he was still a bit stuffy this morning, off to school he went.
His being home yesterday meant that I had to cancel my scheduled midwife appointment and ultrasound, though. I didn't want to drag both of them to the appointment, so rescheduled it to next Monday. We had a good day at home, though - did a lot of coloring, and some puzzles, and they made some pretty crazy collages with glue and cotton balls and pipe cleaners and construction paper.
Today was a much busier day - Dante's first day of school, plus a trip to the gym and to the library, where I signed him up for Storytime, which I think he's going to love. And just a few minutes after Gabe got off the bus this afternoon, he was changed into his soccer clothes and we were off to practice. Wednesdays are just going to be a crazy day.
He did well at soccer, especially since he was pretty tired. He and Dante both woke up at 5am this morning. They've been sleeping so much later lately - usually 'til 6:30 most mornings - so I don't know why they were up so early, but they were both completely wiped out this afternoon. I hope they sleep later tomorrow morning - they both really need it.
I hate that they woke up so early, but I have to admit, it was pretty cute to hear them talking quietly in their room. We have the doors open, so we can hear most of what they say, and it's just so adorable to hear them having little conversations. If only they were so adorable and sweet and nice to each other all day long.....
Don't worry, when they are teenagers that's all they will do is sleep :-)
