Another bout of insomnia last night had me up from 2:30 to 5:30am. Thank god I married an awesome guy who let me sleep until nearly 8:30, which meant that he got the boys fed and dressed, and even packed Gabe's lunch. Not too shabby - and just one of the many reasons we've been happily married for ten years (as of this Friday!).
The insomnia hasn't been nearly as bad lately as it was in the first trimester, but it still creates some problems for me now and then, and I'm just not sleeping very soundly overall, and am very restless most nights. I can really feel it when I do have a good night's sleep, though - I can tell the difference from the moment I wake up. Good sleep really does wonders for you. Not much I can do about the bad nights, though - I'm just trying to make sure I get myself to bed plenty early, so that I can get in as many zzzzzzs as possible!
The cause for all these sleep problems - and the cause of all the sleep problems I'll be having come January! - is doing just fine, though. I had an ultrasound and midwife appointment today, and baby looks great, and the placenta previa has resolved itself, which is a relief. As the midwife put it, I was a 'boring patient' today, which is just fine with me. After everything we've been through over the past year, I am ALL for being boring and normal!
I did ask her about my weight gain, which seems to be increasing at a more rapid pace than I would have expected. I'm not freaking out about it, but I have already gained around 23 pounds, which is definitely on the high end of what's recommended. But she looked back at my chart and saw that I actually gained 42 pounds when I was pregnant with Gabe, so I'm probably gaining at about that same rate now.
That's not a crazy amount of weight, and I'm eating pretty healthy and exercising 5 days a week, so I really don't feel like there's much I can do about it. I'm not going to stop indulging in a few treats here and there, so if I gain a few extra pounds, so be it. I'm sure if it gets to out-of-control levels, they'll give me a talking to.
Anyway, I'll go back in 4 weeks, and will also have to go sometime in the next month for my glucose tolerance test - drinking the gross orange drink and getting my blood drawn. Then I'll go for my next appointment 3 weeks later, and then will be down to going every 2 weeks. Time is flying..... and the baby is clearly getting bigger and stronger (if I sit very still, I can actually see some of the kicks now - so freaky, but soooo cool!), and still incredibly fond of kicking my bladder. A troublemaker already.
We had a good weekend. Gabe had his first soccer game, and we ran a few errands, and I got my hair cut and colored (after wearing it in a ponytail literally all summer, I was shocked to see how long and how gray it really was when I finally wore it down a few weeks ago!) and had a pretty quiet day on Saturday.
Sunday the boys and I went down to the beach early to check out the half-Ironman triathlon that was being held. We saw most of the swimmers come out of the water and head out on their bikes. It didn't hold their interest for too long, but since we were at the beach, they were willing to hang out for a bit while I soaked up the atmosphere. Just being there and watching a race like that gets your adrenaline going, and it made me very happy that I've got a 5K coming up this weekend! As we were watching, Dante said that he wanted me to be racing. I told him that I couldn't do it this year, but hopefully another year : )
I knew Scott was going to be coming by the beach on his bike - he was out for a long bike ride - so we stayed long enough to say hi to him on his way past, and then me and the boys went out for breakfast. And when we went home, I found out there was a free event at the Westerly airport, so we went to check that out, and had a really fun time.
The boys strung some airplane beads, got their faces painted, and Dante climbed up and sat in some one- and two-seater airplanes. Gabe didn't want to - too nervous to climb up, I think. And of course we got to see a bunch of planes take off and land, which was fun. They have this event every year, and we'll definitely be going back. They give free airplane rides to kids 8 and older, and although I don't think Gabe will be interested in that, I know Dante will!
The cold that Gabe had last week hit both me and Dante, as well, and as a result, I didn't run at all this weekend. I did a very light workout at the gym on Saturday, but was feeling so rundown on Sunday that I didn't want to push it. If I wasn't pregnant, I probably would have, but this isn't the time for me to be testing my limits.
Looking forward to the race this weekend, though. Dante and I were in Providence today for my appointment, and I was getting excited just being up there. It's so funny how excited I'm getting about a race that I'm not even 'racing.' I just can't wait to get out there and be lined up with the crowd and hear the starting gun. I'm an addict, plain and simple. But if you have to have an addiction, I guess it's a pretty healthy one to have!
Great news with the baby! Hopefully with the kids in school for a bit you can catch a nap, eh? Making babies is hard work!!!

I'm glad to hear your placenta is back where it belongs (pesky things, aren't they?). I hear you on the addiction to racing -- you'll be at your own start line before long!
